Glad you showed the praying mantis. It sure doesn't look like that photo. I wonder if there was something wrong with that pattern. Maybe they gave the wrong gage, needle size, and yarn suggestion. I think you could still make it work. You would need to go the Home Depot or Lowes and find something flexible but with more strength. But I'll bet the people there can come up with something that will work. It just depends if you want to put that much more work into it. It probably means taking it apart and reinserting the new flexible wire or whatever it turns out to be.
It's a lot of trail and error. I had to do a lot of problem solving like this when I was in theatre. They are always wanting you to make some weird things.
